School Visits
Colchester Central Mosque welcomes school, college, and home-education groups for educational visits throughout the year. Visits support the Religious Education (RE) curriculum and give pupils a first-hand introduction to Islam, mosque life, and our local Muslim community — delivered in a way that’s tailored to their age group.
What a Visit Involves
A typical visit lasts 45–60 minutes and includes:
- A warm welcome and introduction to the mosque and its role in the community
- A guided tour of the prayer hall and facilities
- An age-appropriate talk on the basics of Islam, worship, and daily practice
- A question and answer session with a member of our team
Booking and Notice Period
Visit requests are made through our online booking form, where you can tell us your preferred dates, group size, and any additional needs. The form is also linked at the end of this page.
- Please book at least four weeks in advance, subject to availability.
- Visits are not available during Ramadan — we’re happy to help you find a suitable date outside this period.
- We’ll confirm your date, time, and duration in writing, along with arrival and parking instructions.
Supervision: a minimum ratio of 1 adult per 10 pupils (primary) or 1 adult per 15 pupils (secondary) is required, in line with standard school trip guidance.
Dress Code and What to Expect
- Out of respect for the mosque as a place of worship, we ask pupils and staff to dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered.
- Shoes are removed before entering the prayer hall.
- Headscarves are a normal part of Muslim women’s dress in the prayer hall, but they are not required for non-Muslim visitors. Anyone who’d like to try wearing one is welcome to bring their own.
- Out of respect for Islamic custom, our team may not shake hands with visitors of the opposite gender — a smile or verbal greeting is always welcome instead.
- We may take a small number of group photos for our own records and promotional use. Consent is confirmed at booking, and anyone who’d rather not be included can simply step out of the photo.
- Overall responsibility for the safeguarding and supervision of pupils rests with the visiting school at all times, in line with the school’s own safeguarding and educational visits policies.
Accessibility
Please tell us at the time of booking about any access requirements — mobility, sensory, or otherwise — so that we can prepare the visit accordingly.
Cost
There is no charge for school visits. Donations to support our community work are always welcome, but never expected.
