Sadaqatul Fitr
Sadaqatul Fitr (also known as Fitrana) is a compulsory charity due on every Muslim (and on behalf of any dependants) before the Eid prayer. It purifies our fasts and helps those in need to celebrate Eid.
To fulfil the purpose of Sadaqatul Fitr, it must reach eligible recipients before Eid. For that reason, we strongly encourage everyone to pay in the last few days of Ramadan (or earlier) rather than leaving it until the morning of Eid.
When Is It Due?
- It becomes due at sunset on the last day of Ramadan.
- It should be paid before the Eid prayer (and ideally well before, so it can be distributed in time).
Who Should Pay?
- Every Muslim who has surplus beyond basic needs should pay it.
- The head of the household may pay on behalf of all dependants, including a child born on that day.
How Should It Be Paid?
- In the UK, it is commonly paid as money based on the value of staple food, so it can be distributed efficiently and on time.
- It should go to eligible recipients (generally the poor and needy).
