How It Runs
Every open day follows the same easy shape, so you’ll always know what’s coming next.
ONE
The tour
A relaxed walk through the mosque — the main prayer hall, the ablution area, and a bit of the building’s own story. 5–10 minutes.
TWO
The talk
A short, plain-language introduction to Islam and daily life at the mosque, followed by time for your questions. 5–10 minutes.
THREE
The tea
Light snacks and refreshments while you chat with committee members and regulars — the part most guests stay longest for. No time limit.
Why We Host It
Most people who live near a mosque have never been inside one. Open Mosque Day is our way of closing that gap — not with a lecture, but with a cup of tea and an honest conversation.
It costs nothing to come, nothing is expected of you while you’re here, and you’re welcome whether you’re curious, sceptical, or simply live down the road.
We’re not asking anyone to agree with us. We’re asking them to meet us.
The Details
- Who’s welcome: everyone local — all ages, all faiths, and none
- Out of respect for the mosque as a place of worship, we ask visitors to dress modestly — shoulders and knees covered
- Shoes are removed before entering the prayer hall — please bring or wear socks
- Headscarves are a normal part of Muslim women’s dress in the prayer hall, but they are not required for non-Muslim visitors. Anyone who’d like to try wearing one is welcome to bring their own
- Out of respect for Islamic teachings, some of our members may not shake hands or have physical contact with those of the opposite gender who aren't close relatives. This isn't personal — a smile, a nod, or a hand on the heart is a warm and perfectly welcome way to greet someone here, and our members will be happy to guide you if you're ever unsure.
Open Mosque Day pauses during Ramadan. We’ll confirm the next date once Ramadan has ended.
A Few Things People Usually Ask
Do I need to know anything about Islam first?
Nothing at all. The talk is written for people visiting for the first time.
Is it really free?
Yes — there’s no charge to attend and no collection during the visit itself. It’s simply an open invitation from the mosque to the wider community.
Can I bring children?
Absolutely. The visit is short and informal, and children are welcome for all three parts, including the tea and snacks at the end.
What happens with my shoes?
You’ll be asked to remove your shoes before entering the prayer hall, in keeping with normal mosque practice. There’s a shelf just inside the door, and this will be pointed out during the tour.
Do I need to book in advance?
It helps us plan enough tea and snacks for everyone, so a quick reservation is appreciated but not required — you’re welcome to simply turn up on the day.
