About Colchester Jamiah Masjid
Colchester's first masjid - established 1985
Our Story & Heritage
Colchester Islamic Cultural Association (CICA) – also known as Colchester Central Mosque – was established to provide a welcoming place for regular communal worship. Since its inauguration, the mosque has grown into a central gathering point for Muslims in Colchester – a space to pray, learn, support one another, and build community.
We warmly welcome visitors of other faiths (and of no particular faith) who would like to visit, ask questions, and learn about Islam and Muslims first-hand, including school and institutional visits.
Colchester is often described as Britain’s oldest recorded town, with a history reaching back to Roman times, when it was known as Camulodunum. In a town known for its deep roots and “firsts”, CICA was proud to help establish Colchester’s first masjid – creating a permanent, local home for worship and community life in the heart of the town.
Our mosque is located in a part of Colchester shaped by centuries of history. Priory Street and the surrounding area have long been connected to the town’s Roman heritage, and being based here is a reminder that our community is part of Colchester’s continuing story – serving today’s needs while standing close to a remarkable past.
Our History
Pre-1985 — A Growing Need
Before the mosque was established, there was a close-knit Muslim community in Colchester of approximately 500 people. With no mosque in the town, Muslims often travelled to nearby towns such as Ipswich for congregational prayer and Jumu’ah. A prayer room at the University of Essex was also used as a place to pray. Over time, the community wished for a local and accessible mosque in Colchester.
1985 — CICA is Formed
In October 1985, a group of local Muslims formed an organisation: Colchester Islamic Cultural Association (CICA), with the mission of establishing Colchester’s first mosque. A dedicated committee was formed and worked through many challenges to build something lasting for the community.
1992 — A Permanent Home
By the grace of Allah, the committee located a property suitable for a mosque. 3 Priory Street was purchased on 20 May 1992 for £49,000.
1992–2005 — Growth & Expansion
The mosque continued to flourish as the Muslim community grew. The mosque was run by local Muslim members, with committees elected — may Allah reward them for their service. As the congregation expanded, the need for more space became clear. When a neighbouring property became available, the community came together and purchased 3 Priory Street on 3 May 2005 for £130,000.
2010–2020 — A Major Expansion
With demand for prayer space continuing to rise, a decision was made by the committee and local community that the mosque needed expanding. Permission was sought and granted, though it proved a complex, lengthy project with many obstacles.
Today — Our Mosque
Alhamdulillah, Colchester Central Mosque now serves as a well-established centre for worship, learning, and community life. The mosque provides dedicated prayer areas and supporting facilities to accommodate regular daily salah, Jumu’ah, and community programmes throughout the week.
Capacity: approximately 600 worshippers across all prayer areas.
Alongside the prayer space, the mosque also supports a range of services for the community, including educational activities, pastoral support, and welcoming visits from schools and local institutions.
